ZIMBABWE EMBRACES D50

ZIMBABWE EMBRACES D50

ZIMBABWE is now officially using diesel 50 (D50) after the phasing out of the high sulphur diesel 500 (D500) last month.

Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) advised the public last week that the transition from D500 to D50 fuel is progressing well in compliance with General Notice 669 0f 2017 which banned importation of D500 in November 2017.

“Compliance testing by ZERA shows that majority of fuel retail sites in the country are now selling D50 only,” said ZERA’s CEO Engineer Gloria Magombo.

“A few sites selling the remaining stocks of D500 are expected to exhaust the fuel by 30 April 2018”.

During the transition from D500 to D50, motorists whose vehicles use D50 only are urged to verify with retail sites that they are buying fuel compatible with their vehicles.

ZERA, through its field personnel, will continue to conduct compliance audits to ensure that high fuel quality is maintained at the correct prices and necessary steps are followed where violations occur.

The average price of D50 is $1.22 per litre and the reduction in price is due to the use of pipeline which is a cheaper mode of transport.

D50 comes in with a number of environmental and health benefits.

The fuel drastically reduce cases of lung and cardiopulmonary diseases as a result of decreased particulate matter or black smoke in diesel vehicle emissions

Other benefits of the low sulphur D50 are reduced maintenance costs of engine, prolongs life span of engine and improves fuel consumption and performance because of better combustion quality.

Eng. Magombo encouraged consumers who were not clear about the transition to contact ZERA for further explanation.

Plug home electronics, such as TVs and DVD players, into power strips; turn the power strips off when the equipment is not in useā€”TVs and DVDs in standby mode still use several watts of power
Drive sensibly; aggressive driving such as speeding, and rapid acceleration and braking, wastes fuel
Look for the ENERGY STARĀ® label on light bulbs, home appliances, electronics, and other products. ENERGY STAR products meet strict efficiency guidelines.
Turn things off when you are not in the room such as lights, TVs, entertainment systems, and your computer and monitor.
Regularly defrost manual-defrost freezers and refrigerators; frost buildup decreases the energy efficiency of the unit. Donā€™t allow frost to build up more than one- quarter of an inch
Match the size of the pan/pot to the size of the heating element (plate)
